Human beings are different than other animals because we have an extra region of our brain called our higher brain or "executive functioning brain". Executive functioning refers to our brain's ability to regulate and manage thinking processes such as: planning, attention, problem solving, verbal reasoning, inhibition, mental flexibility, task switching, and initiation and monitoring of actions. Unfortunately for children, teens and young adults, this part of the brain has to mature during development and is often not fully functioning until the person is in their mid to late twenties. For Addiction After One Dose Of A Drug!

Alan Leschner, former director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse and specialist in addiction, discusses two reasons why people use drugs. First being, to feel good and the second, to feel BETTER! If you're happy, drugs will take you to a state that is beyond your happy state. If you're depressed, drugs will merely take you to a regular person's happy state and your brain may instantaneously decide it likes this new state leaving you craving the drug from that second forward. Now when it comes to the growing minds of teens, they are happy one moment and depressed the next, so risk for addiction is high.
The brain functions on balance (homeostasis) and keeping the body chilled out (regulated). So, if you're sad when you take a drug, your brain might decide it's best for you to keep taking the drug and force immediate addiction to occur. I am so seriously not trying to scare you. I'm trying to educate you! You "deserve" to know the truth.
#1 - Young adults, especially teenagers, need to understand that your body's chemicals are changing rapidly as you mature. One day, the chemicals found in street drugs could possibly mix fine with your chemical system, while the next day, you could instantly become addicted and/or experience irreparable brain damage and/or overdose and/or have a bad trip and/or die. The result of mixing your brain's chemicals with street drugs is beyond what science can even fully comprehend. Each person can end up with very different levels of brain damage or brain disturbances from drug use such as suffering from a lifetime of addiction, depression and/or anxiety.
#2 - There are time slots in a teen's life (time being unique to each individual person) whereas, if marijuana is used, a mental illness called schizophrenia has been seen to result. Schizophrenia has been described to me by someone who suffers with this illness as being “stuck in a bad drug trip that you can't get out of".
#3 - Drugs such as ecstasy can cause "permanent" brain damage with only "one" dose meaning you might not be able to figure out how to pour milk into your cereal after you use. This is serious stuff!
#4 - If you have already become addicted to drugs or alcohol, talk to your school counsellor or contact Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous immediately because you're young and have the strength for successful treatment. Give yourself this gift no matter how hard it is because it will only get harder with each day you use.
#5 - Drugs are made by people who are not able to care whether you live or die when you take their concoctions. Many times, they are selling drugs to support their own drug addictions and I've known of dealers who recovered from addiction and felt great remorse for what they did when feeling controlled by their addictions. The more money an addict has, the more drugs they can take. So, dealers are known to cut costs by using cheap products as filler like rat killer or whatever toxic chemical they can get their hands on found in back-alleys or taken from back-sheds where toxic chemicals are kept. So, one day you may take Dave's homemade drug that you don't have a bad reaction to because you handled the low level of rat killer, but the next time, maybe you take Bob's drug that he made, while stoned out of his mind, and you die. When using street drugs, you are "choosing" to trust people that you would "never" in a million years trust with your life!
#6 - Drugs lead to addiction. Addiction is a loose word that you may not understand the result of, so I will give you an example. Think of something you feel that you cannot live without such as food. If food was taken away from you, you might feel like you couldn't survive without it and you would become a different person possibly scavenging and thinking about how you can find food every moment of your day. This is how you will feel once addicted to drugs, which can happen "to you" with only "one" dose and at "any" time.
#7 - If you have used drugs and not had a bad reaction, you’re at the highest risk for experiencing a bad reaction such as death because you "think" you’re safe when you’re "not" and continue to use.
