Driving Passion
Lucas Scarfone - Q&A
Return to Passion: The Fire Within Issue

Tell us a little about your business?
What do you do?

When I first launched my business through the Summer Company program it began as "Scarfone Automotive Photography" which was solely focused on photography of high end automobiles such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche. The majority of my business is still automotive based, but I have now widened my focus to real estate, corporate events, food, and construction photography. I have also developed new products including custom canvas prints, photo books, and posters. These products are proudly displayed by my clients in their personal garages, offices, and homes. It is a great feeling to know that people have my photographs hanging on their walls for them to enjoy.

How did you know you were passionate about photography (cars)?

My passion for photography was actually born through my passion for cars. I would use my allowance to buy all the car magazines, posters, and books that I could get my hands on. At the age of 14 I emailed the president of the Viper Club of Ontario who graciously invited me out to their next club event. My parents drove me to the meet in Burlington where I started photographing the exotic automobiles with their Nikon F50 film camera, ever since then I have been hooked. Not only could I be around these amazing machines, I could now document every detail of them through my lens.

What did you do with that passion or how did you get to where you are today?

With my new found passion for photography I started taking photos at several local car meets, cruises, and track days. My parents would drive me 2 hours each way to the race track so I could spend the day shooting all the cars. I started to post my photos online and introduce myself and my work to the owners of the cars. They were all very receptive to it and encouraged me to keep shooting and learning about the craft. I took their advice and now at the age of 21 this is my full time business and I can't imagine doing anything else.

What do you enjoy most about living your passion?

The thing I enjoy most is being able to wake up and look forward to going to work. I have had some amazing experiences and I still can't believe how many opportunities present themselves on a daily basis. I also enjoy meeting new people at every event and photo shoot I go to. From CEO's to sports figures, each client has a wealth of knowledge and insight about business, cars, and life in general. I love hearing all the different stories and experiences they have to share.

What helped you most to achieve your goals?

The support of my family, friends, and clients has helped me achieve my goals so far in my career. My family and friends have always been there to encourage me through the tough times and congratulate me on my accomplishments. I have to say that I have the best clients in the world. Since the beginning they have always been there to mentor me and push me to do my best. A lot of them started out with a small business like myself, so they are always willing to help in any way then can. I am very grateful for their support.

What advise would you give to another young adult who has a dream and/or is passionate about something?

My only advice would be to go for it! If you have an idea or passion then pursue it. You never know what may come of it. Looking back, I never thought I would be where I am now, but I am glad that I have kept pushing in order to make my business a success. Your dreams are out there, go get them!
